THE going at Salisbury has changed dramatically overnight, with the good to firm replaced by ground described as soft, good to soft in places, after 19mm of rain overnight.

Today is to remain overcast with the possibility of further outbreaks of rain, albeit much lighter and more patchy. The going change has already resulted in five non-runners, with more likely to follow.

Clerk of the course Jeremy Martin said: “We were predicted 8-12mm but we got 19mm so it has had an impact. It’s taken it pretty well. I’m calling the majority soft, I might be being a bit hard on myself, but it’s definitely going to ride on the slow side.

“It had been left well alone for the last five days and had got pretty quick by yesterday afternoon because I knew the rain was coming but 19mm is a lot of rain to get overnight before racing.”
