PAUL NICHOLLS took his seventh win in the last nine runnings of the StanJames.com Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup as Sametegal struck under a patient ride from Sam Twiston-Davies.

Four runners, including French raider Pythagore, jumped the last virtually in line, but Sametegal was still virtually on the bridle and, when Twiston-Davies asked, he stretched four lengths clear of Bennys Mist.

Bennys Mist, who had also finished runner-up to Nicholls’ Sound Investment last year, had been left in front when Laser Hawk hit the cross fence and held that position for much of the straight, before Sametegal, Aerlite Supreme and Pythagore joined him two out.

Though he stayed on gamely to fend off the other two, he was no match for the progressive novice winner.

Patient approach

Winning jockey Sam Twiston-Davies said afterwards: “It was nice to get it right today. He was a little unlucky last time [at Musselburgh] so it’s great he’s got a win on the board now.

Asked if his more patient tactics were deliberate after Sametegal had surrendered a last-fence lead at Musselburgh, Twiston-Davies said: “I tried to, but it still didn’t really work. He’s taken me there jumping the last, but luckily he had plenty left this time.

“He’s travelled really well all the way round and pinged the last. You can go for those sort of strides when your horse has loads left.”

Sametegal is now no bigger than 14-1 for the Brown Advisory & Meriebelle Stable Plate at the festival.

“He’d be interesting in that,” said Twiston-Davies. “We’d have to see how he comes out of that and we leave decisions like that to the boss, he tends to know what’s best for the horses.

“I think he’d be better on better ground. He’s a nice-moving horse.”

The Greatwood Gold Cup has been used as a Grand National trial in the past, but Shutthefrontdoor put in a lethargic performance on his path back to Aintree. He was pushed out to 25s for the National with SkyBet and William Hill.

Bennys Mist did his Aintree ambitions no harm, with a return to the Topham his presumed target. He was an impressive winner of the Grand Sefton in December and was runner-up to Ma Filleule in the 2014 Topham.
