THE Craven Stakes at Newmarket has been stripped of its penalties for Group 1 and 2 winners in a move that could prove a shot in the arm for the race as a trial for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

Previously, winners of Group 1 and 2 races such as the Dewhurst Stakes and Racing Post Trophy had been forced to shoulder a 3lb penalty in the Craven Stakes, run over the same course and distance of the Classic at Newmarket, which had been seen as a deterrent by trainers to running their potential Guineas candidates in the race.

The last winner of the Craven Stakes to go on to win the 2,000 Guineas was Haafhd, who completed the Newmarket double in 2004. It is hoped the changes to the race conditions, which bring it in line with Newbury’s Greenham Stakes over 7f, will attract a higher calibre of competitor and increase the race’s relevance as a Guineas trial.

‘A very good move’

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam, who could saddle Racing Post Trophy winner Marcel in the Craven in April, welcomed the move. He said: “I am delighted that [weight] penalties will no longer be applied in the Craven Stakes.

“I think it’s a very good move. The Craven is run over the same course and distance as the Guineas so this makes it the perfect Guineas trial.

Regarding Marcel’s preparation, Chapple-Hyam added: “It is definitely the plan to aim him for a Guineas but if he has a trial beforehand is a different matter. If we do decide to give him a prep race, the Craven will come under strong consideration.”
