RALPH BECKETT’S progressive stayer Moonrise Landing landed an unlikely victory under a patient ride from Jim Crowley in the Marathon.

Stuck behind a wall of horses on the approach to the straight, Crowley stayed composed, and when the pair eventually found daylight, the 6-5 favourite came with a late run to claim Anglophile and Ballynanty.

Crowley said: “I had traffic problems coming down the hill, the first two nipped up the inside but I was always confident I was within striking distance. It probably looked worse on the television than it felt.”

Owner-breeder Peter Savill was unsurprisingly delighted with his mare’s career-best performance and is looking forward to a potentially fruitful summer.

Savill said: “She’s got a turn of foot and is a terrific mare. Hopefully she can translate that to turf.”

VOLUNTEER POINT took the opening race of All-Weather Championships Finals Day as odds-on favourite Cold As Ice suffered an injury.

Sent off the 4-1 second-favourite, Volunteer Point looked set to lock horns with the favourite as front-runner Primrose Valley fell away early in the straight.

However, after Cold As Ice went wrong around a furlong out, Graham Gibbons was left to come home two and a quarter lengths ahead of the fast-finishing Bint Dandy. Cold As Ice crossed the line in fifth and was later taken off the course in the horse ambulance.

It was subsequently reported that the mare had finished lame in front and banged her head in the stalls, causing her to bleed.

Gibbons later recorded a double aboard David Barron’s Wolowitz, who secured a narrow win in the three-year-old sprint.

It all went wrong for favourite Gracious John, who stumbled out of the stalls, then raced far too keenly under John Egan before keeping on without a clear run to finish sixth.

Another market leader who sufferred little luck in running was Haalick in the three-year-old mile. He was checked at a crucial stage on the turn into the straight, and could not catch winner Sea Of Flames, who clinched the finale for Silvestre de Sousa and David Elsworth.

Roger Varian’s three-year-old could only manage third with Race Day finishing second after making most.

THE training performance of the day went to Tracey Collins, who produced Captain Joy to peak following a very troubled build-up.

The grey nearly died of colic in the winter, with Collins struggling to get him back to the track. But following victory in a four-runner fast-track qualifier at Dundalk last month, the seven-year-old once again came home best by half a length.

Pat Smullen produced Captain Joy with a withering run on the outside of Mindurownbusiness to secure the win, with Sovereign Debt staying on against the far rail to take second place in the race again.

Collins said: “It was more go than touch with him for a time. Mr and Mrs Stanley [owners] have been phenomenal supporters of mine and allowed me to what I wanted, I’m just so pleased he was able to pull it off for them.”
