Japan: Noriyuki Hori, trainer of Japan’s Horse of the Year Maurice, has revealed that the Longines Hong Kong Mile winner may make his first appearance of 2016 at the Dubai World Cup meeting on March 26.

Maurice, who downed local champion Able Friend at Sha Tin in December, has been recuperating since his trip to Hong Kong but connections plan to take him to Meydan for the Dubai Turf on World Cup night.

The five-year-old son of Screen Hero enjoyed a remarkable year in 2015, gaining Grade 1 victories in the Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo and Mile Championship at Kyoto before his defeat of Able Friend at the end of the year under Ryan Moore.

‘Recovering nicely’

Speaking at the Japanese Racing Association award ceremony, Hori said: “He is at the Northern Farm in Shigaraki and recovering nicely from his Hong Kong Mile win.

“His main asset is that he tries so hard in every race but it is also a weak point as it takes him time to recover. I can’t say when he will return to my yard and which race is his first one, though it will become clearer next month.

“The Dubai Turf is definitely in our plans though.”

‘Challenge the best’

Hori also confirmed plans for last year’s top three-year-old colt Duramente, who is set to reappear next month.

He said: “His first race of the year will be the Grade 2 Nakayama Kinen [on February 28]. We will determine his target for the season from there.

“I am sure he is a horse capable of challenging the best in the world. The Dubai Sheema Classic and the Arc are both possibilities at this stage.”
