KASAKH NOIR came out on top of a thrilling battle with Wolfcatcher to win the juvenile hurdle at Market Rasen, and both horses advanced their JCB Triumph Hurdle claims in the eyes of Betway, who cut the pair to 25-1 (from 33) for the Cheltenham Festival contest.

The John Ferguson-trained Wolfcatcher was sent off 4-5 favourite and looked to be going marginally the best on the approach to the final flight. However, a blunder handed the initiative to 5-4 shot Kasakh Noir, and it was Dan Skelton’s runner who prevailed by a short head after a protracted battle to the line.

Right two pulled clear

Winning rider Harry Skelton was impressed by Kasakh Noir’s performance and said: “I was encouraged to see him win like that. We’ve always dropped him in because he is a bit keen. He is a big, raw horse and he is a chaser in the making – he jumps a lot of the hurdles like they are fences – but he had to get stuck in, and he did.”

Skelton added: “He is in the Triumph and he is in the Fred Winter, we will see what the handicapper does but the two at the top of the market pulled clear there – the right two were there and we will see how we get on.”

Triumph Hurdle form

Kasakh Noir’s game victory, beating an unexposed rival, paid a compliment to his Newbury conquerors Fixe Le Kap and Tommy Silver, both of whom feature in the betting for the Triumph Hurdle.

Fixe Le Kap, who represents the same connections as last year’s winner Peace And Co, is a top price of 8-1 for the festival’s juvenile showpiece, while Tommy Silver, who won the Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial on Sunday, can be backed at 20-1.
