SELECTIVE watering began soon after racing was over at Cheltenham on Wednesay, with clerk of the course Simon Claisse keen to preserve the going as good, good to soft in places.

Explaining the need to give nature a hand after two dry days, clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: “We’re expecting 9-10C tomorrow, and the dry outlook lasts through the night and into Friday, so we’re watering selectively to maintain current conditions of good, good to soft in places.

“We won’t water the six furlongs of the shute, which is easier ground, but will be doing all of the quicker bits, which are the turn away from the stands, most of the back straight, round the corner, and all the way back to the home straight, which we might do a little bit on.”

He added: “For tomorrow and Friday we switch to the New course, which is a slightly longer circuit on which they come down to the straight on a lower point of the course and then have a longer climb home. We were on the New course on trials day, but the actual ground we’ll be racing on hasn’t been raced on since last March.”
