Scoop's sudden swerve causes in-running chaos

THERE was a dramatic conclusion to the 2m novices’ hurdle at Sandown on Friday afternoon as What’s The Scoop snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, causing chaos in Betfair’s in-running market.

Over £29,000 was traded at 1.01 – the lowest price available on Betfair – on the Barry Geraghty-ridden What’s The Scoop, who had looked sure to win when safely clearing the final obstacle in a big lead.

With the race at his mercy, however, the leader swerved sharply to his left and virtually pulled himself up, opening the door for Starving Marvin to reclaim the lead.

Starving Marvin, who had looked well beaten in second, had been matched at 1000 on Betfair. A total of £27 was traded at that maximum price.

In an incident-packed race, the 6-4 favourite Air Horse One had unshipped rider Noel Fehily at the first hurdle when slamming the brakes on and jinking left on the approach to the obstacle.

Connections’ reaction

Barry Geraghty said: “He jumped the last big and I knew he was having a look at the stands up the straight. It is a daunting place and he was having a big look when he got to the front.

“When the rail ran out he just turned left – I still thought if I could pull him back on course five or six yards from the stands rail he would still win.

“He just panicked as well as being a big baby. He is really intelligent – like his owner and trainer!”

Trainer Nicky Henderson was bemused and said: “He wouldn’t have a bad thought in his head at home. He is just a big horse and still a baby.”

Quirky family

What’s The Scoop, who was searching for his first win, is a half-brother to the enigmatic Harchibald who, eleven years ago, played a leading role in one of the most dramatic Champion Hurdles of all time when failing to go by Hardy Eustace despite still being on the bridle halfway up the run-in.

That was one of a number of efforts that saw the mercurial Harchibald tagged as a ‘bridle horse’ and, based on his Sandown antics, What’s The Scoop looks likely to add to the family’s talented-but-quirky reputation.

The 1.01 club

Betfair report that only 13 horses since 2011 have had more money traded on them at 1.01 and then lost.
