SKY BET on Friday became the latest bookmaker to sign up to British racing’s authorised betting partner scheme, a move their chief executive Richard Flint said made sense for both parties.

News of the deal was exclusively revealed in the Racing Post last week and the Leeds-based firm, whose chairman is former BHA chairman and owner-breeder Paul Roy, join Betfair, bet365, BetVictor, 32Red and a number of smaller companies in accepting the terms.

The main benefit of agreeing to become an ABP is the right to sponsor British races at participating tracks – Sky Bet back the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the opening race of Cheltenham – but the new partnership will also allow the Sky Bet-sponsored Talksport 2 to broadcast from the festival as planned next week.

“We are pleased to have reached this voluntary agreement with racing,” said Flint, chief executive of Sky Betting & Gaming. “It makes sense for both parties and demonstrates our continued support for a sport that we and our customers love. We look forward to developing the partnership over the next few years.”

Rust welcomes new ABP

The BHA’s chief executive Nick Rust welcomed Sky Bet’s arrival, whose change of stance comes one week after the government announced it would be closing the loophole that allows remote bookmakers based offshore to avoid contributing to racing’s finances.

A key player in the ABP shake-up, Rust said on Friday: “We are delighted that Sky Betting & Gaming have agreed to become a partner of British racing by signing as an ABP.

“It shows that they understand the benefits of a partnership approach between racing and betting and we look forward to working with them to deliver all the benefits of being an ABP.”

Sky Bet, sold last year to private equity company CVC Capital Partners in a deal valuing them at £800 million, recently reported a 36 per cent rise in revenue to £247 million in 2014-2015 from the previous year.

Under the terms of their three-year deal, they will make voluntary payments to help fund British racing, but major betting operators Ladbrokes, William Hill, Paddy Power, Betfred and Coral have so far declined to sign up, which has meant losing high-profile sponsorship deals with racecourses aligned to the policy.

Ryanair has taken over sponsoring the World Hurdle from Ladbrokes and communications firm Timico has replaced Betfred as backers of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, while it was announced on Wednesday the Paddy Power Gold Cup will now be supported by BetVictor.
