BREEDERS’ CUP TURF winner Found was beaten on her seasonal reappearance at the Curragh on Sunday, finishing only third behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zhukova.

Found beat Derby and Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe winner Golden Horn at last year’s Breeders’ Cup, but she was some way below her best in the Alleged Stakes.

“She was a bit fresh and keen and just got tired on the ground,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien. “She’ll be fine though. Her plan was to go to the Tattersalls Gold Cup, and the plan was to get two runs into her before that.

“I knew she’d be fresh after being in America. You can work them but it’s not the same as running them; she raced in Ryan’s hands the whole time but will come forward tonnes from that.”

How the race panned out

Success Days, who confirmed his effectiveness on heavy ground when bolting up in a pair of Derby trials last year, cut out the running under Shane Foley, while Pat Smullen on Zhukova tracked the pace setter in second.

Found, who was sent off as the 9-10 favourite, was settled in third place under Ryan Moore and held every chance as they entered the final couple of furlongs but could not raise her game when asked.

The lightly-raced Zhukova, who was making just her fifth start, stormed clear under pressure, despite wandering slightly, and beat Success Days by four and a half lengths at 6-1. Found was three lengths further back in third and was not given a hard time by Moore once her chance had gone.

Improving mare

“It was straightforward, she’s a nice mare and won well. She’s improved from last year, she has grown up and strengthened,” trainer Dermot Weld said about Zhukova.

He added: “She lengthened and handled the ground. My late mother bred her and we have all the family. It’s forwards and upwards with her, and we might have a look at the Blue Wind Stakes next.”
