Monday racing: Kempton, Newcastle, Wolverhampton

IF YOU’RE worried about Tom Bellamy’s fitness you need worry no more because Bellamy is riding The Last Bridge in the conditional jockeys’ hurdle race at Kempton (1.05).

You have to be fit to be champion jockey and The Last Bridge has long been Richard Johnson’s secret weapon in his battle for the championship. That is why it is almost three years and 17 outings since another jockey (Adam Wedge) was allowed to ride the nine year-old, who is trained by Johnson’s mother, Susan.

The Last Bridge is what is known as “hard work” – a bit like digging up a field with a spade or pushing a lorry up a hill. For a jockey, he’s an alternative to a day in the gym.

At times during today’s race The Last Bridge will be on the bridle, at other times he will be off it and Bellamy will be pushing, shoving and verbally encouraging (“go on darling, please”) The Last Bridge to stop losing touch and start finding it again. Sometimes The Last Bridge will show willing and sometimes he will show unwilling.

Finally, having dropped out of contention The Last Bridge will stay on again, too late, and will finish seventh, possibly sixth. Although Bellamy’s immediate feeling might be one of disappointment, when he has recovered his breath he will be delighted to have taken his fitness to a new level and beg Mrs Johnson to put him up again. Richard Johnson will interrupt to say, “No, you can’t.”

Is Wedge the new Hutchinson?

Talking of Adam Wedge (see above), I’m surprised that he doesn’t get more good outside rides, his inside ones being for Evan Williams, as second jockey to the currently injured Paul Moloney. Wedge may be second jockey but he’s a good one, as his tally of 25 wins from 120 rides for Williams this season indicates.

I like Wedge and I like Wayne Hutchinson, who was once another good second jockey behind Robert Thornton for trainer Alan King. Today Midnight Cowboy is likely to show improved form for the King-Hutchinson combination in one novices’ hurdle (3.10) while Hutchinson has a good chance of winning another (2.10) for Noel Williams on Authorized Too.

Russell at Newcastle

And so to Newcastle and a small mystery. Why is Davy Russell rather than Brian Harding riding Sir Vinski for Nicky Richards (2.30)? Is it because it has long been part owner Anne Marie Melville’s ambition to have Russell ride for her? These are just some of the many questions to which I do not know the answer.

Others include, will Clan Chief (1.55) jump fences well enough to take advantage of his tempting hurdle mark of 93? Will Clan Legend (2.30) defy another hike in his rating and take his winning sequence to four? Will Onlyfoolsownhorses live up to his name (1.20)? Will any of Lisa Harrison’s three runners win a best turned out award? I’m told the yard win them regularly.

Not forgetting Wolverhampton. Oh, I did. Never mind, there’ll soon be another one.
