HUGO PALMER feels running 2,000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold in the Investec Derby would go against the horse’s character, his genetic make-up and the trainer’s own gut feeling about the horse.

Following his triumph in the first Classic of the season, Galileo Gold was genetically tested with the results suggesting the three-year-old had only a one per cent chance of being at his optimum over the Derby trip of 1m4f.

As a result, Palmer stated he would not be running the horse at Epsom but Harry Herbert, racing manager for Galileo Gold’s owner Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, later said all options remained open, including running in the Derby.

Speaking at Newmarket on Thursday evening, Palmer admitted there was still a chance to run Galileo Gold at Epsom although he emphasised his feelings that his Guineas winner is primarily about speed.

He said: “He’s a fast horse and won the Guineas in a time faster than Frankel. I’m not suggesting he’s better than Frankel, but he’s a really fast horse and that’s what I know about him.

“The Derby window is seemingly not closed because I haven’t been asked to take him out of the race, but I don’t think it’s very open either.

“The most obvious race to try and win is the Sussex Stakes which the owner sponsors. It’s worth nearly as much as the Derby and in the absence of Solow I haven’t seen a miler in the last 12 months that we’d try to avoid. In my mind that’s where we should be going.”

No influence from trials

An inconclusive set of Derby trials have put more focus on whether or not Galileo Gold should be given a chance to run in the Derby, but Palmer says he will not be swayed by the lack of a standout Epsom candidate.

“These Derby trials have in no way guided my opinion of the horse and the plan has been for quite a long time to run in the Irish 2,000 Guineas,” Palmer told Racing UK. “He’s in really, really good shape. What happens beyond that I don’t know.

“The Derby, so far, is lacking an obvious winner and I think racing is the winner for that. If ‘racing’ owned Galileo Gold then ‘racing’ could make the decision to run in the Derby, but it doesn’t.”

The trainer added: “He’s a very exuberant horse and that’s one of the things I don’t like about Epsom for him. He gets above himself and you almost have to exercise him twice a day, that’s the sort of horse he is.

“I’ve never thought he was a mile-and-a-half horse because I think he’s all speed. If the testing had told me something conflicting to what I’d already known then it would’ve thrown it open to debate but I don’t think it does.”

US Army Ranger and Wings Of Desire are the general 4-1 joint-favourites for the Derby with Galileo Gold 8-1 with the firms that are still quoting him for Epsom.
