Showmethewayavrilo wins the prize for the best named horse running

 By David Ashforth 6:40PM 8 MAY 2016

FIRST things first. The prize for the best named horse running on Monday goes to owner-breeders Eric Jones and Pat Hancock for Showmethewayavrilo.

By Showcasing out of Avrilo, Showmethewayavrilo not only has a good name but also a fine chance of winning the 3.00 at Wolverhampton.

Of course, it should really be Isthisthewaytoavrilo, if not Isthisthewaytoamarillo, but Hancock and Jones only had 18 characters to play with. So get ready for the winner’s enclosure and the chance to singalong.

The only serious musical competition is from Edward Elgar who, although dead for over 80 years, has already shown that he can hurdle proficiently, posthumously. In case he wins at Towcester (6.00) I’d like to be the first to write “Harry Skelton got a nice tune out of Edward Elgar.” Thank you.

Later, in the amateur riders’ hurdle (7.30), Mr Tommie O’Brien’s experience enhances the chance of Diego Suarez abandoning his maiden status. Several riders are inexperienced, none more so than Miss G L Double (7), who hasn’t got any, at least under Rules.

Then again, at Musselburgh, neither has Miss A M Slack (7), presumably Anna Slack, daughter of trainer Kenneth Slack. She makes her debut on Omid in the amateur riders’ race (2.10). Good luck to both of them.

Two claimers to follow

A 7lb claim covers a wide range of experience and competence. A capable young jockey in the right place at the right time and with the right attitude can quickly be in demand, witness the recent exploits of Adam McNamara and George Wood.

McNamara, 19, who rides at Musselburgh for Iain Jardine and Patrick Morris (4.10 and 5.45) joined Richard Fahey from Ireland. Since riding his first winner in January he has ridden eight more from 53 rides in the UK (0 from 11 in Ireland).

He has very much been noticed and so has Wood. James Fanshawe’s 18 year old apprentice has ridden five winners, all this year and four of them in the last fortnight, from a grand total of 37 rides last year and this. Winning a competitive handicap on Knight Owl at Newmarket on Qipco 2,000 Guineas day has helped. Today Wood has a ride for Roger Teal at Brighton (4.20).

It’s disappointing that only one of Brighton’s seven races has eight runners but the card does offer the chance to study a few more 7lb claiming apprentices. The most experienced is Charlie Bennett with 16 winners from 246 rides over five seasons. He will be keen to win again on Bahamian Boy (2.20) for his boss Hughie Morrison because, after 34 rides, Bennett is still waiting for his first winner this year.

In the same race, Daioni is unlikely to give Chris Kelly his first ever winner on just his 13th ride, but it’s all necessary experience. Look out too for Sophie Killoran, (12 winners from 140 rides), in the 2.50, Rhiain Ingram (11 from 219) in the 3.50 and 7.50 at Windsor, and Mitch Godwin (5 from 71) in the 3.50. A small day but not for them.
