HENRY CANDY has ruled out running Saturday’s impressive July Cup winner Limato in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood at the end of this month as the race will come too soon for him.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the four-year-old’s impressive two-length success, Candy did not discount the idea of stepping back up to a mile for the Sussex Stakes, but has now discounted that idea.

The trainer said on Sunday morning: “He’s fine, but he’s tired. It was quite a day out for him and he’ll take a while to get over it I think. Racing possibly doesn’t take quite so much out of him now that he’s a year older, but he’s definitely one that could do with three or four weeks between racing.

“Goodwood will come too soon, and although he might have the speed for the Nunthorpe I didn’t make an entry for him and that’s the end of that as I don’t think we’ll be supplementing him.”

The trainer added: “The next possibility would be Deauville, for the Prix Maurice de Gheest, but it’s usually too soft there. Mr [Paul] Jacobs is coming here tomorrow [Monday] and we’ll have a chat about it then.”
