NINE years after first spending the summer with Guillaume Macaire, James Reveley landed the biggest prize in French jump racing when the appropriately named So French held off stablemate Storm Of Saintly at the end of a gruelling Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris run on rain-drenched ground.

Reveley revealed afterwards that a kick above the knee last Sunday had threatened his participation in France’s version of the Gold Cup.

“On Monday I thought I had no chance of riding this weekend, so I went back to Jack Berry House and they really helped my progress,” said Reveley, who was still applying a packet of frozen peas to his leg when re-living the race. “It was a haematoma, but with only five days to go I needed to get right quickly.”

So French had won the Grade 1 Prix Maurice Gillois for four-year-olds last November but was forced to miss his intended prep race three weeks ago owing to an abscess. 

“I thought he might just lack a bit of experience, but missing the prep might have been the difference because he arrived fresh and was taking me there the whole race,” said Reveley. “This is my Grand National or Gold Cup and it’s the race I’ve wanted to win since I started coming to France.”

Never stopped improving

Macaire was winning a third Grand Steep in four years and a fourth in total, but was understandably muted on the podium after the fatal injury to his third representative and race favourite As D’Estruval.

“So French was a bit short of work earlier in the spring and was a bit rusty, but he’s been improving all along,” said Macaire.

Reflecting on his long association with Reveley, Macaire added: “When he came to me nobody knew him. He’s an intelligent, serious guy and has never stopped improving over the years he’s come back to me.”
