THE joint-favourites for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup were in action during a post-racing schooling session at Leopardstown on Sunday, but whereas Don Cossack delighted connections with a fluent round Vautour slightly fluffed his lines with a first-fence mistake.

Vautour, ridden by Ruby Walsh, pleased Willie Mullins with the rest of his jumping as he followed Ballycasey before joining up towards the end of the workout, with Pont Alexandre and fellow Gold Cup hope Don Poli following on behind.

Mullins, who confirmed that the Gold Cup remains Vautour’s festival target, said: “Ruby said the mistake Vautour made at the first fence was down to him idling, but once he got that out of the way he jumped the rest well.

Don Cossack impressed rider Davy Russell during the schooling session and the Gordon Elliott-trained nine-year-old could be his Gold Cup ride should Bryan Cooper decide to ride Don Poli for owners Gigginstown House Stud in the Cheltenham showpiece on March 18.
