RYAN MOORE yet again demonstrated why he has earned such a sky-high reputation on the international stage when snatching the HK Classic Cup via a daring inside route on Sun Jewellery.

The HK$10million (£890,000) event was an absolute thriller as Moore, in Hong Kong on a six-week stint, switched his mount to the inner and then drove him home up the rail before just holding on in a desperate finish.

After winning last month’s Classic Mile, Sun Jewellery became only the second horse ever to win the first two legs of the Hong Kong four-year-old series after Floral Pegasus in 2007.

“Sun Jewellery’s a class horse and class usually tells over a distance,” said Moore. “He’s probably just better than them – he’s just got a class edge and that allows horses to go further than you’d think they would.”

The Snitzel gelding was sent off only second favourite behind the John Moore-trained Werther, who had looked a shade unlucky in being beaten a neck in the Classic Cup.

Hugh Bowman took no chances this time on Werther, who sat on Sun Jewellery’s flanks in mid-division before being moved outside horses to throw down his challenge wide in the straight where Moore briefly looked short of room behind horses.

Moore, though, quickly took decisive action by taking the inside line and his mount held Werther again, this time by a head.

“He’s got an awful lot of courage,” added Moore, “and that as well as his attitude are the two things that stand out about him most. I did always feel that I was going to get up. Werther started moving early and I wanted to keep tabs on him – he got away from me a bit but my horse dug in very well.”

Yet while Werther did indeed get first run to an extent, his supporters may well suggest he forfeited ground when he was taken wide at the turn; the third leg of what is fast developing into a famous rivalry will come next month in the Hong Kong Derby over an extra furlong.

Trained by seven-time Hong Kong champion John Size, Sun Jewellery has now won six of seven starts in the region where, despite their obvious prestige, the four-year-old Classics are denied international Pattern status because they are restricted to local horses.
