German Football Federation: trying to buy Frankfurt racecourse

Germany: Campaigners fighting the city council’s plan to sell Frankfurt’s historic racecourse to the German Football Federation (DFB) say they have uncovered evidence the land passed to local authority ownership under Germany’s nefarious anti-Jewish laws before World War II.

City officials have always maintained no proof exists to support claims that Carl and Alfred von Weinberg – the president of the racing club between 1918 and 1938 – were forced to in effect gift the racecourse to Frankfurt, following the introduction of the notorious Nuremburg Laws.

But at a press conference hosted by the Frankfurt racing club on Tuesday, historian Dr Gerhard Moser revealed he had documents which he said prove the Weinbergs were forced to relinquish ownership as part of the “Aryanisation” of sports clubs.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that Moser had not been given access to the Frankfurt Land Registry.

Moser said: “I have the documents and I am willing to submit my sources to the city of Frankfurt.”

Frankfurt Racing Club treasurer Carl-Philip zu Solms said on Tuesday: “Until now, it was about a moral obligation towards the Jewish heritage of Frankfurt, now the facts are there.”

Fighting to save course

Campaigners successfully fought a referendum calling for the racecourse to be saved in June 2015, although turnout was insufficient for the city authorities to declare the outcome binding.

Despite having been served notice to quit by December 31 last year, the Frankfurt Racing Club have been awarded five fixtures for 2016, although the last of its black type races has been transferred to Baden-Baden’s spring meeting.

The DFB, which itself is under intense public scrutiny following a string of allegations of tax avoidance and corruption, is planning to construct a new national academy on the site at a cost of €109 million.
