Betfred Dante Stakes (Group 2) 1m2½f, 3yo

WITH a rating of 88 and only a win on the all-weather at Wolverhampton to his name, connections of Wings Of Desire elected to go for the Dante Stakes to see what they had – and it turns out they may well have an Investec Derby horse.

Frankie Dettori elected to ride the brother of the high-class Eagle Top and close relation to Sariska over stablemate Foundation, and the dual Derby-winning rider made the correct choice as he defeated Deauville with Foundation third and favourite Midterm only fifth.

In a year when no horse has stood out as a true Derby contender, bookmakers reacted positively to Wings Of Desire giving him quotes of between 7-2 and 7-1 for success at Epsom next month.

Another Golden Horn?

Last year’s Dante winner Golden Horn went on to be supplemented for the Derby for £75,000 and romped to victory for Gosden and Dettori, and the pair are likely to attempt to repeat the feat with Wings Of Desire.

Gosden said: “He’s freakish. He was showing me things early on [last year] that made me think ‘goodness’.

“He’s still learning. I confess this horse never did a piece of half speed [work] until the middle of March. His two favourite activities are eating and sleeping.”

He added: “I took him out of the Derby in March and my plan was the King Edward VII at Ascot which his brother won, but my plan has changed. All being well he’ll go to Epsom and we’ll take him there to have a feel of the hill [at the Breakfast with the Stars] as he’s still a baby.”

Deauville run down

Having tracked the pace, Ryan Moore shot Deauville through to lead with two furlongs to go and he skipped a couple of lengths clear of the field on the Aidan O’Brien-trained runner.

But he had a target on his back and Dettori kept at the immature Wings Of Desire to run down the leader, albeit without the excitement or panache displayed by stablemate So Mi Dar in the Musidora Stakes the day before.

Dettori said:”Everybody kept on knocking him but I knew this horse could be anything and he proved it today.

“I think if he goes further he’ll be even better.  I can only improve as it’s only his third day at school. There’s plenty more to come.”
