A WEEK after capturing the Coral Welsh Grand National Kerry Lee added another major staying handicap chase to her CV when a brilliant leap at the last helped Russe Blanc deny Midnight Prayer in a thrilling finish to Warwick’s biggest race.

The 20-1 winner, a rarity in being described as white, was partnered by Charlie Poste, who performed a minor miracle after his saddle slipped during the £60,000 contest.

He led on Russe Blanc entering the home straight, but Midnight Prayer, whose stamina was assured as he won the 4m National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival two years ago, looked a big danger.

The threat appeared to increase before the last, but Poste conjured a fine jump from his willing partner, who won by three and three-quarter lengths from the 15-2 runner-up.

Dromnea filled third at 16-1, while Houdlon Des Obeaux was fourth at 15-2.

All white for Poste

Poste, who won the Welsh National on Le Beau Bai for Lee’s father Richard in 2011, said: “Unfortunately because of a loose horse running wide going down to the last down the back, my horse has gone with him and the saddle has half gone around his belly.

“We had to jump the last down the back with it halfway around, which was a bit hairy, but luckily I got my weight right and back where I wanted.

“This lad really wants it. He got a really good jump at the last; he came up for me big and bold and from then he wasn’t going to be denied. He stays all day and is as tough as old boots.

“I don’t know if we’ve got to the bottom of him yet. Credit to Richard and Kerry – they’ve given him all the time to mature and it’s come to fruition now.”

‘A really nice model’

Lee, a former member of Channel 4 Racing’s production team, took over from her father in the summer and has enjoyed a fine start to her new career, capped by the victory of Mountainous in the Welsh National recently.

The family’s trademark are mud-loving staying chasers and Russe Blanc, owned by Mark Jackson, fits that profile perfectly.

“A lot of hard work has gone into this horse,” said Lee. “The girls at home have done a fantastic job with him.

“Dad spotted him at the sales as a three-year-old and thought he was a really nice model. It was Dad’s eye that bought this horse and Mark also fell in love with him when he came to see him.”

Lee is set to campaign Russe Blanc over extreme distances and has the Betfred Eider Chase at Newcastle on February 27 in mind for Mountainous, whose long-term aim is the Crabbie’s Grand National.

Plans for Prayer

The Aintree showpiece could also be on Midnight Prayer’s agenda.

“I don’t think he will go to Cheltenham as there isn’t anything for him,” said trainer Alan King. “We’ll find a race – he might need a bit more weight for the National.”
