BRIAR HILL is set to stake his claim at Gowran Park on Thursday for a place in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, when he is due to make his first appearance of the season in the Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle.

The Willie Mullins-trained eight-year-old, who won the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival in 2013, has not been out since falling at the final hurdle in the Grade 2 Boyne Hurdle at Navan in February.

Mullins said on Sunday: “The plan is to bring Briar Hill back in the Galmoy Hurdle on Thursday. We are looking forward to getting back on track and we will see how things go before making further plans.”

Briar Hill, owned by Andrea and Graham Wylie, is a 33-1 chance with the sponsor of the World Hurdle, the market headed by the impressive Thistlecrack at 9-4 with Ladbrokes.

Briar Hill’s stablemate Annie Power is a 6-1 shot with Ladbrokes, which have Camping Ground, Cole Harden and Vroum Vroum Mag – yet another trained by Mullins – all at 8-1.

For all his recent success at the Festival, Mullins has yet to win the World Hurdle which has only been won by an Irish-trained runner once since 1995.
