WINDSOR’S evening meeting was abandoned after three races on Monday after the stewards decided the bends were too slippy for racing to continue.

An inspection was held after the 1m2f handicap in which the winner, Grapevine, almost came down when losing his footing on the bend 5f out, leading jockeys to express concerns about safety.

A delegation of riders and trainers accompanied stewards and other officials to the area. The jockeys said they were prepared to ride in the next race, a 6f sprint, but with the pull-up area also on a turn, the stewards called off the whole fixture for safety reasons.

Stipendiary steward Richard Westropp said: “The jockeys came in from the previous race unhappy with the bend. It was slipping and it was plain to see from the pictures it was slipping.

“On that basis we set our normal procedures in place and three jockeys plus the safety officer Fergus Sweeney, three trainers, plus the clerk of the course, racecourse executive and the veterinary officer went out to inspect.

“Bearing in mind the next race was going to be six furlongs the bend potentially wasn’t going to be an issue. The only problem was going to be the pull-up. But one or two were showing signs of slipping pulling up and on the basis of that, safety of horse and jockey the sensible decision was to abandon the rest of the meeting.”

‘They had a shower and now it’s slippy’

The meeting had begun on watered ground that was good, good to firm in places, which jockeys said rode fast. Then it began to rain and there was a heavy shower before the third race.

Sweeney said the jockeys would have ridden in the sprint but they were concerned about the bend, which trainer Ed de Giles described as “fast and slippy”.

Shane Kelly, also part of the delegation, said: “The bend is fast, they had had a shower and now it’s slippy.”

Trainer David Simcock added: “There are no print marks. It is all going laterally. It is very fast on that bottom bend.”

Westropp said the stewards did not want to take the risk of running the sprint and added: “Where would it have all ended up if one or two going considerably quicker on the pull-up had fallen over?

“On the basis of that, safety has to come into it. If we had gone out there and run the six furlong race and it ended in disaster it wouldn’t have been good reading the paper the following morning.”

With three races having been run there were no refunds for racegoers.

Clerk of the Course Jeff Green said: “Rain caused the ground to become slippery and unsafe for horses and jockeys on the top bend and so we have been forced to abandon racing after the third race.

“We would like to apologise to all owners, trainers, jockeys and racegoers that were present for the inconvenience caused.”
