O’Faolains Boy: bold display when winning at Newbury last month

O’FAOLAINS BOY is set to attempt to strengthen Britain’s Cheltenham Gold Cup challenge by testing his credentials against ante-post favourite Djakadam in the BetBright Trial Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday.

With Cue Card the only member of the home team quoted in the top seven places in the betting for the Timico-sponsored showpiece, there is space for more resistance to Ireland’s domination and trainer Rebecca Curtis is hoping the 2014 RSA Chase winner proves up to the task.

O’Faolains Boy, a best-priced 33-1 for the Gold Cup, missed last season through injury but showed he retains plenty of ability with a bold display when winning at Newbury last month.

The Pembrokeshire-based trainer resisted the temptation to go for the Coral Welsh Grand National, opting instead to wait for the Gold Cup trial, which could feature last year’s winner Many Clouds and Hennessy Gold Cup hero Smad Place as well as Djakadam, who has been confirmed for the race by owner Rich Ricci.

Conditions should suit

“The BetBright Chase at Cheltenham is definitely the plan for O’Faolains Boy,” said Curtis.

“He has been in really good form since his win at Newbury last month. He has come on for that win and has been working well at home.

“He won at the festival on good ground but these days I would prefer to keep him to softer ground, just to help his legs.

“The likely ground on trials day should be suitable for him I would think and hopefully, he can run a nice trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.”

The ground at Cheltenham was on Sunday described as soft, with an unsettled week forecast.
