BOOKMAKERS, as a rule, are not usually slow learners yet they have left themselves ripe for another Knockara Beau beating with George Charlton full of confidence his evergreen teenager can make a mockery of the general 25-1 on offer about his chances for Saturday’s Grade 2 galliardhomes.com Cleeve Hurdle.

If the adage ‘fool me twice, shame on me’ holds true then the 13-year-old has the industry six feet under in a pit of humiliation. Two years ago he won this very race, at 66-1, from none other than At Fishers Cross and Big Buck’s. Eight times he has hit the frame at the course, with five of those at 22-1 or bigger – including on his last start when second on New Year’s Day.

“He was second there the other day, carrying 8lb more than when he won the Cleeve, and the race was run five seconds quicker, so I would say his form is as good as ever,” said Charlton.

There are myriad issues when comparing times, but with both races taking place over the same course and distance, on ground described as heavy, at a similar time of year and with the Topspeed figures within 5lb of each other, it would seem a fair enough comparison.

Loves the rain

Charlton stopped short of predicting a little bit of history would be repeated, but he is expecting a big run from the horse that ended the winning streak of Big Buck’s.

Thistlecrack’s a superstar. I’m not one of those trainers that’s going to say we’ll beat him, but we’ll try and get as close as we can and my horse loves it there so he’ll run his race. He’ll have to beat us,” Charlton said.

“He’s been there 19 times and has been competitive almost every single time. As long as the rain comes, and they might not get as much as he’d like, then he’ll be thereabouts. When it’s very soft he’s at his absolute best.”
