Luke Harvey: trying his luck as a horse

Wednesday’s racing: Kempton, Lingfield, Musselburgh and Newbury

LEG LOCK LUKE’S going to get stuffed. Still, he’s used to it.

As a jockey Leg Lock, alias Luke Harvey, had his own style. It was not a style avidly copied by other jockeys although that might, in any event, have been difficult. Anyway, having given his all as a rider Leg Lock Luke is trying again as a horse and runs in the 2.00 at Newbury. That’s the novice hurdle won, shortly after 2.00pm, by Premier Bond.

Leg Lock Luke (equine division) has a classic jumping background. In other words, he was bought in Ireland for €9,000 in 2014 and sold in England in 2015 for £100,000. Inbetween he fell in a point-to-point at Ballysteen, pulled up at Athlacca and beat four other finishers in a race for five year-old maiden geldings at Loughrea. To be fair, he might have won at Ballysteen if the second last fence had been the last fence and Breezemount, the runner up at Loughrea, subsequently won a similar race.

Terry Warner bought Leg Lock Luke which means that he’ll be carrying the same colours as those worn by Rooster Booster (2003 Champion Hurdle), Detroit City (2006 Triumph Hurdle) and Big Easy (2014 Cesarewitch).

Warner’s done racing proud over many years and trainer Colin Tizzard and jockey Noel Fehily are both excellent but if they can make something of Leg Lock Luke I’ll have semolina pudding for dinner – and I hate semolina pudding, even with a dollop of jam on it.

Pointing pointers

If Leg Lock Luke had run in the bumper (4.20) he’d have met horses with similar backgrounds. Stowaway Magic was bought in Ireland for €4,500 (later for €25,000) and sold in England for £100,000 after winning a four runner maiden point-to-point at Liscarroll. Reilly’s Minor was bought for €9,000 in Ireland in 2014 and, having fallen when looking the likely winner in his sole point-to-point, fetched £48,000 in England.

Shrewd Tactics fetched £70,000 after winning a maiden contest at Dowth Hall. The 11 horses behind him remain maidens. Finally, after winning the last of his four point-to-points, Ballycash was not sold at £28,000. Nigel Twiston-Davies or the current owners, the Million In Mind Partnership, presumably got the five year-old for less.

Which of that lot will prove to be the best? The first intriguing instalment of the answer will be supplied this afternoon.

Jockey school

Meanwhile, at Musselburgh, Lucinda Russell’s academy for jockeys is on display, represented by stalwart Peter Buchanan and the up and coming Derek Fox and Grant Cockburn. We’ll also be able to watch Harry Bannister, who was a good amateur and is now a promising conditional jockey, see how Jamie Bargary fares on three interesting rides for Tom George, and keep an eye on James Corbett, to see if he’s getting any better.

Kempton’s card is for those who enjoy dangerous sports, being composed of unrelentingly tricky handicaps, while Lingfield boasts Russian Bolero (1.00) who ran in the 2014 German Derby but not very fast and may even find today’s weak maiden beyond him.
