Yankees relieved to get closure in Aroldis Chapman case

[ad_1]

TAMPA — The Yankees are quite familiar with drama, so Aroldis Chapman’s pending suspension hardly raised an eyebrow during the first two weeks of camp.

Now that Major League Baseball has issued a 30-game domestic violence suspension for the reliever — and more importantly, that Chapman has decided not to appeal — the Yankees can go about their business as usual, knowing exactly how long they’ll be without the closer.

“I just think it’s good that now the dust can settle,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “Resolution is the right word now. I think we all have a chance now to focus on why we’re really here, which is baseball. … You want to eliminate and you want to reduce. Nobody wants to have to deal with anything that’s not baseball-related.”

CHAPMAN SORRY FOR GUN, INSISTS HE NEVER HURT GIRLFRIEND

Teammates appeared pleased that Chapman’s saga was over, saving the left-hander — and the rest of the players — from a potential distraction over the

next month or more.

“He probably did the right thing by not appealing,” Brett Gardner said. “Go ahead and accept the suspension, recognize the fact that you made a mistake, learn from it and improve from it. We’ll definitely do our best to hold the fort down without him in April, but he’s a big part of what we have going on this year and we’ll look forward to getting him back.”

DAILY NEWS YANKEES PODCAST: AROLDIS CHAPMAN SUSPENSION

“I think for everybody involved, it’s probably better that it was issued, accepted and he’ll serve his suspension and come back rather than dragging it out through an appeal,” Chase Headley said. “It’s over with; we know what it is and we can move forward.

The suspension was a strong message from the league that domestic violence will not be tolerated. That the process was completed in a relatively efficient manner showed that the new policy accomplished its goal — at least for now.

“It’s an issue in society right now that’s a hot topic,” Headley said. “It’s not just here or in the NFL or in basketball; it’s everybody collectively.

It’s something that you want to head off from the start. It seems like the process worked based on the negotiations from last year; it seems like it went relatively smoothly, which is good for everybody.”

As far as how the Yankees will handle Chapman’s absence in the bullpen, Cashman said Andrew Miller will be expected to close with Dellin Betances setting him up.

While not happy, Yankees GM Brian Cashman is relieved the team can now turn the page on the Aroldis Chapman case.

TIMELINE LEADING UP TO AROLDIS CHAPMAN’S SUSPENSION

“I think you can prepare yourself a little bit better for it now and it opens another spot in the bullpen and we’ll continue to evaluate as we move forward,” Girardi said. “I think things happen in the middle of the season whether it’s an injury, or suspension, you weren’t anticipating it the next day. You don’t have time to prepare for it; you have to just make the adjustment that day.”

The Yankees must find a reliable arm or two to pitch in front of Betances, though they have four weeks to sort that out.

“I think it brings an opportunity for one of the younger guys to prove themselves in that first month, now you have an extra spot available,” Betances said. “We’ve got to count on those guys.”

“I feel like the story has been three guys; I think we’re more than that,” Miller said of the bullpen. “We have some depth beyond that that will certainly help us. I think we’ve got all the pieces to be good, to do our job. It’s up to us to back it up.”
