Mets avoid arbitration with ace Matt Harvey, four others

The Mets breathe a little easier after avoiding arbitration with ace pitcher Matt Harvey.

The Mets settled on one-year deals and avoided arbitration with five of their nine eligible players on Friday, including the first sizable raise for ace pitcher Matt Harvey.

Harvey, who made $614,000 last season in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, will earn $4.325 million this year — with two more cracks at arbitration before he becomes eligible for free agency in 2018.

While the Mets hadn’t done much yet this winter to address holes in their bullpen, they also avoided arbitration Friday with a trio of incumbent relievers, as well as infielder Ruben Tejada.

Addison Reed, a former closer acquired late last season from Arizona, will receive a one-year deal worth $5.3 million. Barring another signing, the righty figures to enter spring training as the Mets’ primary setup man for closer Jeurys Familia.

Righthander Carlos Torres also agreed to a $1.05 million deal, while lefty Josh Edgin will make $625K in 2016. Edgin missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery in March. 

Tejada will earn $3 million in his return season from a broken leg suffered on Chase Utley’s takeout slide in the NL playoffs against the Dodgers.

Addison Reed figures to contend for a spot as the Mets’ primary set-up man in front of closer Jeurys Familia.

Familia, who tied the franchise record with 43 saves last season, remains among the Mets eligible for arbitration, along with Lucas Duda, Neil Walker and Jenrry Mejia.

Veteran lefty Jerry Blevins also was re-signed to a one-year contract worth $4 million in December after twice suffering a fractured left forearm last season.

THE BIG SHORT?

Yoenis Cespedes reportedly is mulling an offer from Baltimore worth up to $90 million over five years. The Mets have maintained contact with the slugger’s camp in case the free-agent market leads him to consider accepting a shorter term deal, but a source said they still have not made him an official offer.

The Mets also signed catcher Nevin Ashley to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. He appeared in 12 games for Milwaukee last year.
