Masahiro Tanaka will be the Yanks’ Opening Day starter once again.

TAMPA — It’s official: Masahiro Tanaka will start on Opening Day.

Monday’s starting assignment had been the worst-kept secret in Yankeeland after manager Joe Girardi alluded to it weeks ago. But given Tanaka’s slow start to the spring and his middling performances on the mound, the Yankees hadn’t made it official until Thursday.

Girardi made the announcement during an on-air interview with the YES Network during Thursday’s Yankees-Cardinals game. This will be Tanaka’s second consecutive Opening Day start.

Tanaka allowed one run over four innings Tuesday against the Phillies, striking out five in his final start of the spring. Girardi had called on Tanaka to “dial it up” in his final outing, something the righthander did before the game was rained out.

“It was better; we were happy about that,” Girardi said Wednesday. “The split was better, the curveball was better, the slider was better. The stuff was better.”

Tanaka said through a translator that he had “no problems at all” following Tuesday’s start, but he didn’t get official word of the assignment until Thursday.

“Only 30 pitchers get to pitch in that Opening Day game,” Tanaka said Wednesday through a translator. “Given that, it is a special day.”
