Yankees Insider: Tanaka won’t get extra rest this week

[ad_1]

The Yankees were overly cautious with ace Masahiro Tanaka throughout spring training as they guided the righthander back from offseason elbow surgery.

Now, though, it appears the Bombers have changed their approach.

Manager Joe Girardi said Monday morning he anticipates pitching Tanaka on regular rest when the Yankees play at the Tigers this weekend. Tanaka was originally supposed to earn an extra day of rest with the Yanks off Tuesday. But after rain postponed Monday’s opener against the Astros, Tanaka will no longer have that luxury.

The Japanese hurler will start Opening Day on Tuesday at the Stadium and is scheduled to pitch again on Sunday night in Detroit, when temperatures could drop below 40 degrees. Girardi said he’s comfortable with both the shorter rest and colder weather.

BRETT GARDNER WON’T BE IN YANKEES LINEUP IN THEIR OPENER

Last year, only five of Tanaka’s 24 starts came on regular rest. Fourteen of his starts were on five days rest, while five were on six or more days rest.

“He’s going to have to do it,” Girardi said. “It’s part of our schedule and part of what we have to deal with, so he’s going to have to do it.”

The Yankees could hypothetically insert Ivan Nova for a spot start sometime this week to provide Tanaka with the extra rest. Nova lost a battle with CC Sabathia for the No. 5-starter job and has been relegated to the bullpen to start the season.

Girardi said he hasn’t thought about the possibility of using Nova because “that’s just way too far down the line.”

“I’d like to get through these three days and see where we’re at,” Girardi said. “Who knows? We might need Nova. You might need him for four or five innings on Wednesday, Thursday, or something. And so to really think that far ahead doesn’t make any sense.”

SHREVE GETS SEVENTH

Girardi indicated Monday that lefthander Chasen Shreve will be the Yankees’ seventh-inning man to start the season, with closer Aroldis Chapman serving his 30-game domestic violence suspension.

Depending on matchups, Girardi said righties Johnny Barbato and Kirby Yates could also see action in the seventh. “But Shreve (is) a guy that I would use at any point there,” the manager said.

AN APPLE A DAY

Courtesy of a new MLB partnership with Apple, every major league team will have access to iPad Pros in the dugout during games this season.

The Yankees had a “trial run” with the new devices in Miami this past weekend.

“It’s less stuff that you have to write down. It’s easier to get to stuff,” Girardi said. “To me, it’s learning where it all is, is probably the most difficult part. But we’re used to using them in our office; now you’ve just got to get used to using them on the field.”

RAISING AWARENESS

Girardi plans on wearing a different T-shirt to his pregame press conference each day to “promote” various charities and organizations.

On Monday, the Yankees manager donned a red Shriner’s Hospital shirt during his morning press conference. Girardi visited the Shriner’s facility in Tampa during spring training and spent time with kids suffering from burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft palate and lip and orthopedic issues.

“This is just kind of to bring recognition to places or charities that do really good things,” Girardi said. “Whether you can afford it or not, the Shriner’s Hospital is going to take care of you. I saw a number of kids and it’s tough to see what some of these kids are going through.”
