Long a staple of the game, chewing tobacco could soon be gone from baseball.

The Mets like the taste of the city’s proposed ban on smokeless tobacco.

Amazins’ officials threw their support behind the measure to prohibit chewing tobacco from city sports venues — although questions remain on how — and who — will enforce it.

“We don’t really know the details yet. We haven’t been told how they are going to enforce it,” Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson said Friday.

“Are they (going to) come on the field and give us a ticket? How do you enforce it? Is it going to be a city or state fine, a baseball fine? There are a lot of things we still have to find out.”

The Mets said they believe the ban will help steer children away from using the cancer-causing substance.

“The New York Mets join Major League Baseball in the support of the local law to ban smokeless tobacco in New York ticketed arenas, stadiums and ballparks,” the team said in a statement.

“Preventing children from being exposed to smokeless tobacco is an important initiative and we are glad to play our part in achieving this important goal.”

The Yankees didn’t immediately weigh in.

The city Health Department signaled its support for the legislation Thursday — noting that use of smokeless tobacco among city youth doubled from 2007 to 2013.

The city hopes to have the measure in place for Opening Day at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.

Efforts to ban chewing tobacco — a clubhouse stable among pro baseball teams — have gained momentum across the country over the past year.

A trio of cities — Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco — have already voted to prohibit its use at sports venues.

The bans will be in effect for the start of the 2016 Major League Baseball season.

But some players have expressed concern over how the measures will be enforced.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain has pointed out that coffee pouches — a healthier alternative to nicotine — resemble chewing tobacco.
