Long-time Met killer Adam LaRoche ready to call it quits

One fewer reason for Met fans to have agita this year – Adam LaRoche apparently is set to retire.

The slugging “Met killer,” who has 29 career home runs against the defending National League champs, has told his current team, the White Sox, that he’s hanging up his spikes, according to multiple media reports.

LaRoche, 36, cited a personal issue as the reason and told reporters, “I’ve decided to step away from baseball. I’ll have more in a day or two.”

LaRoche says he is “confident it is” the right decision. But teammates and ChiSox GM Rick Hahn urged him to mull it over. “They asked me to give it a day or two to confirm,” LaRoche said.

He is under contract for $13 million this season.

LaRoche, who has 255 career home runs, was tough on the Mets for years, knocking in 87 runs against them in 139 career games. In 2014 alone, he batted .321 with six homers and 18 RBI in 53 at-bats against Met pitching, notching an OPS of 1.226.

He batted .175 against Met pitching in 2013, but bashed four homers in 10 games at Citi Field, not exactly the biggest launching pad in the National League.

The Mets play a three-game interleague series against the White Sox at Citi Field May 30-June 1 this season. That could have given LaRoche a few more chances at Met pitching, though it’s not as easy against them as it once was.

In 2015, his first year with the White Sox after signing a two-year, $25-million deal to be their designated hitter, LaRoche hit just .207 with 12 homers. So far this spring, he is 1-for-5 with a homer.
