Jacob deGrom ready for redemption, says NL targeting Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE — Jacob deGrom is looking for redemption. After a great sophomore season, the Mets’ lanky, long-haired righthander spent the winter trying to get rid of the memory of his last start of the 2015 season. Still to this day, that 7-1 loss to the Royals in Game 2 of the World Series bothers him.

“I’ve definitely thought about it. That fifth inning wasn’t too good. There has been definitely some looking back on that and kind of seeing where I went wrong there,” deGrom said after throwing off the bullpen mound at the Mets’ spring training complex Tuesday morning. “At times it definitely popped in my mind (this winter) and I want a chance to get back there and redeem myself.”

DeGrom went 14-8 with a 2.54 ERA, striking out 205 in 191 regular-season innings in 2015. He was brilliant in the postseason, until he allowed four earned runs on six hits, three walks in Game 2 against the Royals.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR METS HEADING INTO SPRING TRAINING

While deGrom has found himself thinking about that game, he said he has been more analytical about it than emotional. He is thinking about it and trying to learn from it.

“I am sure there are a lot of pitches I could have back. The thing is to try not to dwell on it too much. I think the reason that’s so fresh in my mind because it was my last start, probably the biggest game of my life,” deGrom said. “So I definitely think about it a little bit, but once the season starts, it will be out of my head and onto a new goal.”

And like last season, that goal is to reach the World Series, but deGrom said he sees no one is laughing at the Mets talking about winning a World Series this spring. Instead, deGrom feels like everyone else in the National League is targeting the Mets and their outstanding rotation.

“I think we’ll be the team to beat. We have a great pitching staff. We made some nice additions to the field and we have David (Wright) back healthy and Travis d’Arnaud is back (and) will be here hopefully the whole year, because he was injured a lot last year,” deGrom said. “I think teams are going to be after us.”

And deGrom can’t wait for his chance to face them.
