CC Sabathia talks game plan to staying sober this season

TAMPA – CC Sabathia is going to get by with a little help from his friends.

More than three months removed from his 30-day stint in a Connecticut rehab facility to battle his alcohol addiction, the 35-year-old joined the rest of the Yankees’ pitchers and catchers at Steinbrenner Field Friday, where he said he knows what he must do in order to avoid falling back into his old pattern.

He plans to reclaim his role as the team’s social chairman, relying on friends, family and teammates to help him along the way.

“I’ve got a bunch of different hobbies now, do different things, so I’ll be able to kind of keep myself busy with video games, hanging out with my teammates,” said Sabathia, who is also in constant contact with his AA sponsor. “It’s something that I kind of got away from the past couple of years, just kind of shutting myself into my hotel room and doing my deed. I’ll be with my teammates, hanging out with the guys in the same role I was when I first got here. Very social.”

During his early years with the Yankees, Sabathia would routinely organize group outings to events such as NBA games.

“He’s always been a guy that players migrate to, love being around,” Joe Girardi said. “I still see that.”

The road trips won’t start again until April, but Sabathia will spend much of spring training separated from his family. Sabathia’s binge-drinking sessions in hotel rooms on the road caused him to finally seek help in October, more than three years after he first realized he had a problem.

“Identifying it, getting ahead of it, is the biggest thing,” Sabathia said. “Keeping myself occupied.”

During an extensive interview in November, Sabathia detailed to the Daily News how he would confine himself to his hotel room on road trips, never letting others see how severe his problem was.

“I didn’t have anybody judging me,” Sabathia said Friday. “I could drink as much as I want, whether that was the whole minibar or just one drink.”

The Yankees have had Sabathia’s back since the day his addiction went public. Brian Cashman stressed Friday that the organization will do anything it can to help Sabathia with his battle, though the general manager noted that there will be plenty of times when nobody is keeping an eye on the pitcher.

“Between him, his family, his teammates, this organization, hopefully everybody’s there and he knows that he can rely on a lot of people to help him fight along the way,” Cashman said. “But I do know it’s a challenge on a daily basis that never goes away. If you think it does, then you’re probably more vulnerable to having a relapse.

“But I believe in CC and we are there as an organization to the best of our abilities to support (him). But you understand at the same time that you punch in in the morning and you punch out in the afternoon and evening and that’s where his commitment, his family support, his friends, his network, his agents … you rely on everybody to be open and honest about, ‘Hey, there’s an issue here,’ so we’re all there to support him the best we can. I know he’s taking it very seriously, which is why he did what he did last October.”

Sabathia isn’t expecting his friends to go dry around him, something he addressed with counselors during rehab. He said he rarely partook in alcohol consumption while hanging out with friends and teammates, reserving his drinking for the solitary confinement of his hotel room.

“That’s why I think (his alcoholism) was so shocking to some people; I was always able to go to do whatever I wanted at concerts, dinner, different things, and not pick up a drink,” Sabathia said. “Once I got by myself, away, that’s when I would drink. It’s easy for me to be out in social settings and kind of hang out with my friends and not worry about what they’re doing because it’s more how I feel about it. It’s easier for me.”

Aside from the addiction issue, Sabathia believes his new sober ways will benefit him on the field, where he’s fighting for a spot in the Yankees’ rotation this spring.

“I think my body will definitely feel better,” Sabathia said. “I’ll be 36 this summer, so any little thing that I can do to stay healthy and feel good is going to matter at this point. Not drinking alcohol will probably be huge for me at this point in my career.”

Sabathia spoke extensively about his problems in November, the first of a handful of times this winter he publicly discussed his private issues. Friday, he spoke about those demons with the media for what he said will be the last time.

“I think it’s kind of well-documented what I went through in October; I felt like I needed to get some help and decided to do that, entered the rehab facility and it was a good experience,” Sabathia said. “I was nervous and scared and I didn’t know what to expect, but looking back at it now, it’s something I’m definitely glad I did.

“I was able to come out after that and just have a good offseason. … I started working out early. I felt rested. I gave my knee a chance to calm down and I was able to have a good offseason as far as working out and integrating back into my family. It’s been a good experience for me so far.”
