Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon is stuck in slam dunk contest mode.

After bursting onto the scene with his leap over the Magic mascot in February, Gordon has arguably stolen the spotlight from Zach LaVine by continuing to show off his bounce. In a loss to the lowly Lakers Tuesday night, Gordon windmill dunked from just inside the free throw line and all purple and gold players moved out of his way to watch in awe.

Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon windmill dunked from inside the free throw line against the Lakers Tuesday night.

Gordon’s athleticism is shocking and he is quickly making a name for himself as one of the league’s most exciting young players. But windmills have a long history in the NBA, most often showcased in dunk contests.

A regular at the event from its inception, Dominique Wilkins made the one-handed windmill famous in the 1984 dunk contest, even though he ultimately lost to Larry Nance.

“If I told you how I came up with the windmill, you wouldn’t believe it,” Wilkins once said. “I was in high school, messing around one day in practice, and we were trying to see who could do the craziest thing with the ball. That’s what I did.”

After Wilkins came Vince Carter, who took the windmill dunk and ran with it, featuring it during games and at the 2000 dunk contest when he pulled out a 360 windmill.
