RUBY WALSH and Killultagh Vic won the Grade 2 novice chase. Twice.

The pair had put the race to bed going to the last. But Killultagh Vic pecked, then slithered on landing, popping Walsh into the air. The distanced Blair Perrone and Lord Scoundrel flew past as Walsh battled to maintain his balance.

He did, at the expense of his right iron, and set off after them. Killultagh Vic accelerated from a standing start and caught and passed them on the run to the line to win going away in a performance that smacked of speed and class.

A mistake on landing nearly saw Walsh out of the saddle

It was as much a display of horsemanship and competitive instinct as it was of supreme equine ability. Paddy Power and BetVictor reacted by cutting last year’s Martin Pipe Hurdle winner into 4-1 favouritism (from 6) for this year’s JLT Novices’ Chase. Sky Bet went 9-2.

“It was a good performance to get back up and win wasn’t it?” said Walsh. “He’s got some turn of foot and that’s with me flapping up and down on him.

“I was nearly off him. He just pinged it and pitched. I think he’s a little bit the forgotten horse, with the bookmakers anyway, and when you look at what he’s done, he’s beaten Thistlecrack and Shaneshill at Punchestown, and in the Martin Pipe he beat Roi Des Francs, the form is rock solid.

“He’s a good horse. You’d have thought the JLT would be ideal but who knows – I just hope he stays away from [Arkle favourite] Douvan anyway.”

But Walsh lifted Killultagh Vic home to win in dramatic style

To Walsh’s delight Mullins’ thoughts are along the same lines. He added: “Ruby gave him a squeeze and there’s so much under the bonnet he’s just took off with him and jumped too fast. He’s a fantastic jumper and always was.

“That was an Arkle Chase performance and we know he stays three miles. I’m looking at the JLT because we have Douvan in the Arkle and I think the JLT will suit him better.”
