SEVENTEEN lengths is a long winning margin in a 3m handicap chase on bottomless ground at Ffos Las in the depths of winter, never mind a three-year-old 7f maiden on the Flat in Ireland during summer – but that is how far Erysimum scored by at Sligo on the first day of this month, and she is out to follow up at Killarney this evening.

That 17-length stroll was the widest winning margin recorded in Ireland over the last decade for a maiden over seven furlongs or shorter, and trainer Willie McCreery thinks he has a smashing filly on his hands.

Just how smashing she is, we might find out later as she contests the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Action Fillies Race (5.50pm) on very different ground at Killarney.

“She is a smashing filly and one that I have always liked,” McCreery said. “It was very important that she won her maiden from a breeding perspective and she did it really well at Sligo, where she handled the conditions.

“I was hoping for a bit more rain before tonight’s race but she has run well on quicker ground last season so hopefully it won’t pose a problem. The one thing she definitely has on her side tonight is that she has experience of running around tight tracks. She obviously won at Sligo, but she has been to Bellewstown as well so the inside track this evening should be fine for her.”

The trainer added: “She’s in great form so fingers crossed she will run really well.”
