LAST season’s leading British-trained juvenile Shalaa has been given the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day as an end-of-season target by connections.

Shalaa, who won five of his six starts as a two-year-old, has not been seen on the racecourse since winning the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket in September after suffering a pelvic injury early this season.

However, Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Al Shaqab racing, reported the exciting colt to be on the comeback trail.

He said: “It’s great news about Shalaa as he went back to John [Gosden, trainer] very recently and is on the mend. He’s been at the National Stud of late and is walking and trotting.

“He’s been a model patient and the plan would be to get him back for the British Champions Sprint at Ascot in October.”

Herbert also confirmed that Mehmas would bid to emulate Shalaa by tackling the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood having won the July Stakes at Newmarket.
