Report: Thurles, Thursday

Ladbrokes Ireland Kinloch Brae Chase (Grade 2) 2m4f, 6yo+

CHELTENHAM Gold Cup second-favourite Don Cossack could be sporting headgear at the Festival in March, after connections said he needed to raise his game following what was ultimately a straightforward success at Thurles on Thursday.

Don Cossack did not go through the race with the ease one would expect of a 1-8 favourite, though jumping was largely sound under Bryan Cooper and he was never stronger than at the finish, pulling nine-and-a-half lengths clear of Wounded Warrior having taken over only two fences from home.

Trainer Gordon Elliott, while happy with the win, believes his stable star could benefit from cheek pieces at Cheltenham.

Needs to sharpen up

He said: “He’s going to have to sharpen up at Cheltenham but he’s better on better ground and over further.

“I worked him in cheekpieces the other day and he absolutely flew. I didn’t want to put them on him today and we need to keep every ace we have until the big day.

“If we’ll have them, we’ll have them for the Gold Cup. I’d have to speak to Michael and Eddie [O’Leary]”.

Bookmakers unimpressed

It was a second successive win in the Kinloch Brae Chase for Don Cossack, though his more laboured performance this time meant that not everyone was impressed, with most firms easing him a little for the Gold Cup to a general price of 5-1 (from 9-2).

Cooper agreed with the visual impression and said: “He’s gone a bit lazy. The main thing to remember is that he’s a better horse on better ground- he only came to himself for Aintree and Punchestown last year. What I liked was that two out there were three on my shoulder and he’s drawn away, no problem.”

Echoing Elliott’s sentiments, he added “There’s only one day that matters, and that’s in March.”
