DAYS HOTEL led throughout to score a third success in four years in Sunday’s Grade 2 chase at Naas.

The 11-year-old, a winner of this race in 2013 and 2014, missed last year’s renewal, which went the way of Mallowney but made amends with what was ultimately a comfortable success.

It was Simply Ned who was sent off the 11-10 favourite but the Nicky Richards-trained nine-year-old was once again found wanting in the closing stages.

Days Hotel had his rivals in trouble as he cleared the second last fence four lengths clear of Simply Ned before galloping strongly up the hill for a decisive win.

In the end, Twinlight overhauled Simply Ned to take second, seven and a half lengths adrift of the winner.

Ground and trip suited

Both winning jockey Andrew Lynch and trainer Henry de Bromhead said conditions at Naas were ideal for their charge, who the latter said had almost lost his life due to an unusual injury last year.

“He damaged his carotid artery last year prior to the Tied Cottage, so we had to finish his season,” said De Bromhead. “He was very lucky not to bleed to death, so it’s incredible that he’s come back. Credit has to go to my vet Shane Ryan and his team to get him back.

“He loves this bottomless ground and two miles suits him down to the ground. It’s all credit to him.

“There’s a 2m1f race at Fairyhouse over Easter, so that would certainly be in contention now but we’ll see how he is after this and work from there.”

BALL D’ARC scored a second win in succession, further boosting the form of Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle favourite Min in the process.

Gordon Elliott’s charge could not live with Min when the pair met in the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle at Punchestown last month but has scored on both starts since.

Held up by Bryan Cooper, Ball D’Arc made steady headway to comfortable reel in his rivals and score by two lengths from Moon Over Germany, reversing the form of the pair’s meeting in a maiden hurdle at Navan in December.

“He’s improving all the time,” said Elliott. “Bryan said he hated the ground there today but he still got through it, so with good ground there could be more improvement too. He’s a nice horse.

“Wherever he goes now, Cheltenham, Aintree, Punchestown or Fairyhouse, I think if he gets better ground, we’ll see a better horse.”
