KEEN ICE (Dale Romans/Javier Castellano), the only horse to beat the great American Pharoah in his Triple Crown season, goes on trial for the Dubai World Cup on his four-year-old debut in the prestigious Donn Handicap at Gulfstream.

Frosted, who was third behind Keen Ice and American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes last summer, posted his own World Cup claims at Meydan on Thursday.

On Saturday, late-running closer Keen Ice concedes weight all round as he bids to do the same in the $500,000 Donn, which also features Dubai-bound Mshawish.

Keen Ice was only fourth on his last start in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs. “We freshened him up after the race at Churchill and he’s come back here and has breezed phenomenal,” said trainer Dale Romans, speaking to the Blood-Horse. “He’s gotten better and better. He’s as good as he’s ever been.”

Al Shaqab’s Mshawish (Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez), who won the Gulfstream Park Turf on the same card last year, showed his aptitude for the dirt with a hard-fought win over Saturday’s rival Valid (Marcus Vitali/Nik Juarez) in the Hal’s Hope last month at this venue. Getting 4lb from Keen Ice in the Donn, he could run in either the World Cup or the Dubai Turf at Meydan at the end of March.

Ladbrokes: 2-1 Keen Ice, 3 Mshawish, 5 Valid, 7 Itsaknockout, 10 Madefromlucky, Mexikoma, 16 Financial Modeling, 20 Closing Bell.

Ladbrokes: 9-2 California Chrome, 6 Frosted, 8 Effinex, 12 Intilaaq, 16 Keen Ice, Hoppertunity, Tryster, 20 bar

Also on Saturday

Gulfstream Park: Gulfstream Park Turf Hcap (Grade 1) 1m1f, turf, 4yo+ (10.23pm GMT)

Fergal Lynch, who is spending the winter months in the US, gets a Grade 1 ride here on Walter Swinburn’s Legendary (Niall Saville). The jockey, who had such a fine season in Britain last year, has partnered a couple of winners this year.

Likely favourite is hugely popular Chicago-based gelding The Pizza Man (Roger Brueggemann/Javier Castellano), who won the Hollywood Turf Cup on his final start of 2015 after landing the Arlington Million in the summer.

Santa Anita: Robert B. Lewis Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo (10pm GMT)

American Pharoah’s trainer Bob Baffert unleashes Mor Spirit (Gary Stevens), on paper his chief Classic hope for 2016 after winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in December.

He is joined by stablemate Let’s Meet In Rio (Kent Desormeaux); their rivals are headed by turf stakes winners Dressed In Hermes (Janet Armstrong/Rafael Bejarano) and Path Of David (Kristin Mulhall/Joe Talamo).

Santa Anita: Las Virgenes Stakes (Grade 1) 1m, dirt, 3yo fillies (10.30pm GMT)

It says much for the reputation of champion filly Songbird (Jerry Hollendorfer/Mike Smith) that she will be long odds-on to extend her unbeaten record to five – despite the presence of fellow Grade 1 winner Street Fancy (Phil D’Amato/Victor Espinoza).

Although the runaway Breeders’ Cup winner is quoted in some lists for the Kentucky Derby, her connections have stated she will be aimed for the Oaks – for which she is 6-4 with Ladbrokes.

Santa Anita: San Antonio Stakes (Grade 2) 1m1f, dirt, 4yo+ (11.30pm GMT)

Yet more potential Dubai World Cup interest as Hoppertunity (Bob Baffert/Flavien Prat) bids to earn his place in the world’s richest race in this $500,000 contest.

Generally, however, this is regarded as the major prep for next month’s Santa Anita Handicap, when the likes of top-weight Hard Aces (John Sadler/Joe Talamo) and El Kabeir (John Terranova/Gary Stevens) could become major players.
