CHELTENHAM on Tuesday refused to say how long Jockey Club Racecourses will wait on long-time backer Ladbrokes before moving to secure a new sponsor for the World Hurdle but a potential successor has revealed their identity with 32Red making clear they would be keen to talk about taking over the festival feature.

With Ladbrokes still to agree the financial commitment that would earn it authorised betting partner (ABP) status, Cheltenham has made clear it cannot sign a new World Hurdle sponsorship deal with the bookmaker, which began supporting the race when it was rebranded from the Stayers’ Hurdle in 2005.

During that time the race, now the feature of the festival’s third day, has enjoyed a golden period thanks to equine superstars Big Buck’s and Inglis Drever.

Cheltenham has acknowledged the support of Ladbrokes in boosting the contest’s profile, but with just nine weeks until this year’s running the racecourse is no longer including the bookmaker’s name in its race promotion material.

The Racing Post understands there have been approaches to Cheltenham from outside the bookmaking industry, but also waiting in the wings is racing’s signed up ABP partner 32Red.

‘Fantastic to have a marquee race’

While fellow ABPs Betfair and Bet365 on Tuesday responded with “no comment” when asked if they had expressed an interest in the championship long-distance hurdle, 32Red chief executive officer Ed Ware – formerly a senior Ladbrokes employee – was more positive about adding the company’s name to the £300,000 prize.

“The short answer is, yes we would be interested,” said Ware. “It would be dependent on the detail but we are always in the market for opportunities like that and it would be fantastic for our brand to have a marquee race at Cheltenham.

“We haven’t spoken to Cheltenham but we can obviously see what’s going on from the sidelines. Nobody has approached us to ask if we would like to take the race but we would certainly take part in a conversation.

“Without prejudging what we would like to discuss with Cheltenham, if that opportunity came about, we wouldn’t be in the market for doing the race for just one year. We would want to do it for three or four years. With ITV taking over coverage next year that would be even better.

“We would swallow having a short run-in to the race in year one but I also think we could move pretty quickly to do something anyway.”

ABP stumbling block

Confirming Cheltenham’s position, communications manager Sophia Dale said: “We would be delighted for Ladbrokes to continue as the sponsor of the World Hurdle and we are not in discussions with any other organisation at this stage.

“However for the sponsorship to continue it would require Ladbrokes to become an authorised betting partner as Jockey Club Racecourses is supporting British racing’s ABP initiative. We very much hope they will do so.”
