Report: Sandown, Friday

Weatherbys GSB Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m4f, 4yo+ fillies and mares

SIX days after going down in a Listed race at Warwick Jessber’s Dream showed she had no problems with the quick turnaround when landing Sandown’s Grade 2 on Friday.

Owned by Chris Giles and Potensis Bloodstock Ltd, the daughter of Milan was a length-and-a-quarter second at Warwick, but produced a performance trainer Harry Fry described as extraordinary.

However, while Fry was impressed with the mare’s effort, he will not aim her at the Cheltenham Festival, preferring to target the Grade 1 Mares Novice Hurdle Championship Final at the Fairyhouse festival that he won last year for the same owners with Bitofapuzzle.

Noel Fehily, who rode Jessber’s Dream at Warwick, was on board again and adopted the same front-running tactics, which worked perfectly as the 9-2 winner drew clear of 13-8 favourite Katie Too to win by eight lengths.

Run, Jessber’s, run

“Noel said Saturday’s race put her spot on for today,” said Fry.

“She’s growing up with the more racing she has and she’s just the sort of mare who’s better off coming to the races and running.

“She doesn’t get as worked up because at home you have to treat her on her own with one other horse. So coming to the races we’ve not had to do much; she’s done two canters since Warwick.

“Today was extraordinary and we couldn’t have hoped for a run like that.”

Plans

Jessber’s Dream, unlikely to go chasing next term, is entered in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham next month, but as a novice she would also have the option of running in the Trull House Stud Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, the festival’s newest race.

Fry is looking elsewhere though. He added: “I don’t think we’ll even enter her [in the new race]. She loves these [heavy] conditions and what we’ll do now is go to Fairyhouse for the Grade 1 mares’ novice hurdle on Easter Sunday.

“Because Easter is not long after Cheltenham this year hopefully there’ll be plenty running there and not going for the Fairyhouse race.”
