THE Alan King-trained juvenile Gibralfaro has been earmarked as a likely starter in the Adonis Hurdle, set to be staged at Kempton on Saturday February 27, en route to a crack at the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

King, who has won the Triumph Hurdle twice this century with Penzance and future Champion Hurdle winner Katchit, said: “Sceau Royal and Who Dares Wins will go straight for the Triumph, and Gibralfaro will run first in the Adonis.”

Gibralfaro, who represents the same connections as Walkon and Grumeti, both of whom finished placed in the Triumph, has won on both starts since joining Alan King from France and is a general 14-1 shot for Cheltenham’s juvenile highlight.

Strong Nicholls team

It is 12-1 the field behind leading Irish fancy Ivanovich Gorbatov, and the Betbright-sponsored Adonis, a recognised Triumph Hurdle trial, should go a long way to sorting out the pecking order among the British-trained juveniles.

Paul Nicholls, who has won the Adonis three times in the last seven years, looks set to launch a strong challenge. Nicholls has entered 12 horses entered in the Triumph and he said: “I hope to get a few to the Adonis at Kempton – Zarkandar didn’t run until the Adonis and went on to win the Triumph.”

Rashaan ready

Meanwhile, Colin Kidd reports Grade 3 winner Rashaan to be firing on all cylinders again after a below-par effort at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Kidd said: “I think he’s back to himself now and he worked really well at the Curragh the other day. We’re going to run in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle and, if that goes well, we’ll obviously have to think about the Triumph.”

The final declarations for tomorrow’s Gain Spring Juvenile Hurdle will be revealed this morning, with Ivanovich Gorbatov expected to be a hot favourite.
