Report: UAE, Thursday

Meydan: UAE 2,000 Guineas (Group 3) 1m, turf, 3yo

A STALWART of the UAE training ranks for more than 20 years, Dhruba Selvaratnam won his first UAE 2000 Guineas with Market Rally making all under Chris Hayes.

Selvaratnam, saddling his 519th local winner, trains on Jebel Ali Racecourse for that racecourse patron and this horse’s owner, Sheikh Ahmed.

Only fourth in the 7f trial, he clearly appreciated this step up to a mile with connections only real moments of concern before the race when he was reluctant to load.

He emphatically reversed trial form with the Godolphin pair of Steady Pace and Roulea, neither who looked the likely winner from a long way out.

It was left to the Marco Botti-trained Lazzam to chase him home with Simon Dow’s Hombre Rojo running on to take third.

Step up in trip to come?

Winner of his only start in his native America, this was only his second local outing and Hayes was delighted. He said: “It was not the plan to make all but he was fractious in the gates and I was keen not to miss the break so gave him a kick as the gates opened.

“Once I was there I was not going to disappoint him and knew he would stay the trip very well. He will actually be better over the UAE Derby trip of almost 1m2f.

“Credit to Dhruba and the team who tried a different headgear combination tonight and it has worked.

“That is my 14th winner in my first season here with Dhruba and it has gone well – though I was stuck on 13 for a while!”
