RUNAWAY BetBright Chase winner Theatre Guide will contest the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 14 days’ time off an official rating of 150, with his trainer Colin Tizzard expecting him to be competitive despite an 11lb hike in the handicap for Saturday’s ten-length win.

The nine-year-old, who recorded his Kempton success off a mark of 139, finished 11th behind The Druids Nephew in the same festival race last year but heads for the Grade 3 handicap in great form having finished second in the Hennessy Gold Cup and third in the Cotswold Chase before Saturday’s rout.

‘Where else am I going to run him?’

“He’s been handicapping for three years and has been threatening to do that,” said Tizzard. “He absolutely bolted up and if you’d put him up 11lb I don’t think it would have stopped him. He jumped and travelled so well.

“It’s going to be a condensed handicap, there will probably be less than a stone covering them and he’s a big, strong horse who can carry the weight, so we’ll go down the handicap route as he’s probably not good enough to supplement for the Graded races. Where else am I going to run him?”

Theatre Guide, owned by Jean Bishop, is a top-price 16-1 with Coral and Betfair for the 3m1f handicap chase.

Big guns on target

Tizzard reported Ryanair World Hurdle favourite Thistlecrack and leading Timico Gold Cup hope Cue Card to be bang on course for their festival targets and added: “Thistlecrack did a lovely gallop but we won’t give him an away day, he’ll go straight there.”
