Report: Cheltenham, Friday

PAUL NICHOLLS saddled a double on the day both his former assistants Harry Fry and Dan Skelton trained their first winners at the Cheltenham Festival.

By landing the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle with Ibis Du Rheu and the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase with Solar Impulse, Nicholls reopened his lead in the trainers’ championship after Willie Mullins had closed to within £40,000 after saddling the second and third in the Gold Cup.

However, the double meant Nicholls finished the festival £119,410 ahead of Mullins, having started the meeting with a £1,201,701 cushion. The best price about Mullins claiming a first title in Britain is 5-4 (from 2-1 at the start of the week). Nicholls remains the 8-13 favourite.

Solar Impulse powered to the front of the Grand Annual field approaching the last under Sam Twiston-Davies, who took his personal tally for the meeting to four, and never looked like being beaten.

“Just when we went to declare him yesterday I thought I needed to do something to bring him back and it was a gut feeling to put the blinkers on,” said Nicholls. “It’s those little decisions that can make the difference. I’m delighted to get Graham and Andrea a winner here and this horse deserved to win a race.”

It was a third winner for Andrea and Graham Wylie, and the biggest priced winner of the week at 28-1. Dandridge, the heavily gambled 9-2 favourite Rock The World and Savello filled the places.

Nicholls also landed the Martin Pipe with Ibis Du Rheu, who was ridden by Jack Sherwood. The five-year-old half-brother to Saphir Du Rheu has long promised to win a big race and duly delivered, obliging at 14-1 and denying Flying Angel an Imperial Cup-Cheltenham Festival double.

“He’s a funny horse and he was always capable of this,” said Nicholls. “At home Qualando would pick him up and carry him. It’s a brilliant ride and I’m so pleased for Jack. He’s had a hard time and it’s really good.”

NO SOONER had Dan Skelton trained his first festival winner with Superb Story in the County Hurdle than Paul Nicholls’ other former assistant Harry Fry got on the board for the first time with Unowhatimeanharry in the Albert Bartlett.

The long-time ante-post favourite Barters Hill led the field along until the home turn, but having got into a battle with Champers On Ice he was no match for the faster finishing Unowhatimeanharry, who was given a peach of a ride by Noel Fehily to land a fifth success of the season for the 40-strong Harry Fry Racing Club.

“If Harry had told me at the start of the season that this horse would be winning an Albert Bartlett I would have laughed,” said Fehily. “We were going to run him in the Pertemps but he won last time and the handicapper put him up 12lb.

“When I schooled him the last day he felt the best he ever has and Harry had him spot on today. There’s no one better at it.”

Fry added: “I’ve lost my voice as I was cheering him from the bottom of the hill. He started the season as a maiden over hurdles and we thought if he could win a race for the club that would be great. To come out and win an Albert Bartlett is incredible.”

Gordon Elliott’s Fagan came from the back to finish second at 33-1, while 20-1 shot Champers On Ice held on for third. Barters Hill was fourth, while favourite Shantou Village disappointed and Long Dog suffered a life-ending injury.

David Bass, who picked up a two-day ban for using his whip above the permitted level, said of Barters Hill: “I thought he jumped and travelled brilliantly, but that’s the first time I felt him get tired after the last – he’s definitely had a race. He’s run well, but you’re disappointed because he’s been beaten for the first time.”

AFTER a festival of near misses Dan and Harry Skelton finally combined for a Cheltenham Festival winner as Superb Story landed the County Hurdle with relative ease.

Dan Skelton had saddled seven horses to finish in the first six without a winner, four of which were ridden by his brother, but Superb Story lived up to his name and got the combination off the mark in just their third season.

“It means everything,” said trainer Dan Skelton. “I know I haven’t been doing it for very long but doing it by yourself is just amazing. We’ve got a great team and I knew it was going to come and I’m delighted it has, and I’m delighted Harry was riding.”

His younger brother added: “Amazing. This is for the staff. They graft and graft and they deserve this. We’ve hit every bit of the woodwork. Thank God we’ve finally hit the goal. I couldn’t have this horse beat.”

The 8-1 shot came home two and a half lengths clear of 33-1 shot Fethard Player, with Sternrubin at the same price getting the better of his better fancied stablemate, 7-1 joint favourite Wait For Me, in the battle for third.

Harry Skelton received a four-day ban for using his whip above the permitted level on the winner.
