The most basic mode of the 1978 video game ‘Home Run’ featured just a batter and a pitcher.

The original sports fantasy game is going digital.

Strat-O-Matic, the 1961 statistics-based board game which allowed players to make strategic and personnel decisions by rolling lots and lots of dice, is getting a major facelift in 2016.

Baseball Daily will update player cards every day the sun comes up to reflect current statistics.

“They found a way into the future,” John Dewan, a member of Strat-O-Matic’s board and a co-founder of Baseball Info Solutions, the analytics company that provides projections for the new digital cards, told the New York Times.

Strat-O-Matic, which made headlines recently when they incorrectly predicted the outcome of the Royals-Mets World Series, plans to launch its digital brand April 4.

As our national pastime reaches a new generation of fans, here’s a look at how baseball games have evolved since nostalgic dice were tossed:

Home Run, 1978

In 1978, when Space Invaders began an international race to arcades, Atari’s Home Run was the simplest version of baseball possible.

Only two players appear on the field: the pitcher and the batter.

Other modes added more fielders in the outfield, but ‘Home Run’ broke baseball down to its roots: one person throws the ball, another hits it.

RBI Baseball was the first console game to use actual MLB player names, but it still couldn’t use team names or logos; instead, the eight teams were listed by city name.

Beyond that, the game also added batter capabilities, like contact, power and base-running speed, as well as pitcher stamina.

Bases Loaded, 1988

The first of four games in the series, Bases Loaded changed the dynamic being one of the first to have the gamer play behind the pitcher, rather than the hitter.

Without licenses from either MLB or the MLB Player’s Association, Bases Loaded used fictional teams, each pre-loaded with a full roster with varying strengths and weaknesses.

Added bonus: one player on each team could charge the mound if hit by a pitch and start a brawl.

Triple Play, 1996

EA’s Triple Play series was one of the first with 3D, giving it an automatic bump over previous games.

Triple Play came in four modes – quick game, exhibition, season or playoffs – and included a Home Run Derby for the big bats of the steroid era.

There was nothing overly fancy about Triple Play, but that was its perfection: it was clean, simple and fun.

Backyard Baseball, 1997

The least professional – and arguably the most fun – of all the baseball video games, Backyard Baseball took gamers out of the stadium and back to the dirt field with Pablo Sanchez, Kiesha Phillips, Pete Wheeler and Kenny Kawaguchi.

The best part of the cartoonish game, of course, were the power-ups, including Screaming Line Drive, Under Grounder and the Crazyball.

All Star Baseball, 1997

First released in 1997 with Frank Thomas on the cover, All-Star Baseball let users play exhibition games, manage an existing MLB team or create a new one in an expansion city, including Mexico City and Puerto Rico.

Yankees play-by-play announcers John Sterling and Michael Kay lent their voices for announcers in the 1998-2000 games.

By the 2005 edition, the final in the series, gamers could use classic players like Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra and Satchel Paige, and play in more than 80 stadiums, including 30 current, the Polo Grounds and retro, current and future versions of Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium and Dodger Stadium.

A sequel to Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey, Jr. – which was a sequel itself for both Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball and Ken Griffey, Jr.’s Winning Run – Slugfest used real players, or allowed gamers to create custom players with different pitches, size, strength and stamina.

The main difference between Slugfest and similar video games was the batting feature: each hitter was given a hitting zone based on his strength at the plate, and the gamer had to locate the pitch within the “hitting oval” to make contact.

The successor to EA’s Triple Play, MVP Baseball improved most upon pitching schemes, allowing players to determine power and targets.

The second edition, in 2004, also allowed gamers to play as the Minor League affiliates of Major League teams, an aspect never before seen in a baseball game.

The series was changed to NCAA college baseball in 2006 and 2007 – the exclusive licensing deal between MLB and Take-Two Interactive in ’05 prohibited other brands from making MLB games – and was eventually discontinued in 2008.
