LEADING owner John Hales, whose big-race triumphs include the Grand National, has assembled a small but select squad for jump racing’s most important week and expects one of them, Al Ferof, to go close in the Ryanair Chase.

Hales, whose famous yellow and red-star silks were carried to Aintree glory by Neptune Collonges four years ago, switched Al Ferof from Paul Nicholls’ stable to Dan Skelton’s over the summer.

Since the move, the 11-year-old, who won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the festival in 2011, bolted up in Huntingdon’s Peterborough Chase before finishing third in the King George VI Chase for the third year running.

He has not run since, something Hales feels is crucial to the gelding’s Cheltenham chances.

“He’s in great fettle and is fresh, which is important going to Cheltenham,” said Hales. “He’ll run a big race – I’m confident of that.”

Grey is the colour

Al Ferof is a general 6-1 for the Ryanair and the owner’s Cheltenham team also includes Politologue, prominent in the betting for the Coral Cup, and Aux Ptits Soins, who won that race last season and heads for the World Hurdle.

“I’ve got three horses – they’re all greys – and they’ve all got good chances,” added Hales.
