EVEN if Thistlecrack wins next month’s World Hurdle, Joe Tizzard does not expect the stable’s latest star to defend his crown in 2017, with emulating Coneygree by winning the Gold Cup as a novice the ambition for the eight-year-old.

Wide-margin victories in the Long Distance, Long Walk and Cleeve Hurdles have resulted in the John and Heather Snook-owned superstar heading the market for the day-three feature at a best-priced 5-4.

But were he to win he would not bid to enhance the race’s record of multiple winners such as Big Buck’s, Inglis Drever and Baracouda, with a novice chasing campaign leading to the Gold Cup the plan.

“We would have gone chasing with him this year but we thought we’d have a go,” said Joe Tizzard. “He went to Newbury and that was make or break. He’s been so impressive we’ve stuck to hurdles but we buy horses to go chasing with and he’ll go chasing.

“He’s been a bit slow developing so he’s eight already and if he takes to it really well it could be a possibility – the Gold Cup is in the back of our minds.

We don’t want to stay over hurdles’

“Even if he wins the World Hurdle, that’s what I’d imagine we’ll do. It’s miles off, but we’ve got this horse who jumps like a buck and we don’t want to stay over hurdles. We’re a chasing yard and we’d aim for the Gold Cup.”

Speaking on At The Races, Tizzard added: “He’s always been a lovely horse and the owners were really patient with him in the first few years. He’s gone on this year and has been amazing.

“He’s come out of Cheltenham spot on, he’s in really good form and is bang on. Our job now is to keep him right.”
