Following the news in October, James Burn takes a look at some stars who have won at the track

Silver Buck
The best of the many Michael Dickinson champions is probably the classiest horse to ever win at Hereford.

As well as capturing two King George VI Chases at Kempton, Silver Buck, who possessed a turn of foot rare for a staying chaser, also mastered Cheltenham winning the 1982 Gold Cup there before finishing fourth in the race a year later when Dickinson saddled the first five home.

The first home of Dickinson’s famous five in the Gold Cup defied top weight in a handicap just 12 days before his Cheltenham success – preparation that is unthinkable nowadays.

Second behind Silver Buck 12 months earlier, he made all in the Gold Cup, battling up the hill to hold off his stablemates. The searching gallop, however, meant he was never the same horse again.

A Grand National regular, who made six appearances in the Aintree marathon, finishing in the frame four times including his 1986 triumph, won a hunter chase at Hereford in 1989 before coming second in the world’s most famous jumps race that season.

Sporting one of the best-known scars in British racing, a legacy from a collision with a lorry, he brought tireless enthusiasm to the job.

Consistent chaser won a handicap hurdle at Hereford in 1989 before returning to the track to bolt up by 15 lengths in a novice handicap chase the following year.

The son of Roscoe Blake won 18 times from 56 starts and was fourth in the Grand National in 1992 a month after finishing third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He is one of only two horses to win what was the Racing Post Chase twice.
